BarCamp RDU
August 4, 2007 - Red Hat Offices, Raleigh, NC
A Bar Camp is an unconference where people interested in a wide range of technologies come together to teach and learn. Unfamiliar with the un-conference format? Here's the idea in a nutshell. Rather than having scheduled speakers, everyone pitches sessions the morning of the BarCamp. Those sessions are put on a schedule, and lots of little groups form for intense group learning. Everyone is expected to teach, to talk, to participate. Yeah, its different from a regular conference - but it works!
Carrboro Coworking is one of the sponsors for this event.

Summary
Carrboro Coworking is a professional shared working space with a cafe-like atmosphere. It is designed to be a welcoming environment for freelance professionals, home-office workers, entrepreneurs, start-up business owners, tech workers, graduate students, writers, architects, civil engineers, designers and others. Subscribers of the Carrboro Coworking space will receive access to a reliable office space inside a unique modern community.
There is an increasing number of mobile workers in and around Carrboro, North Carolina. These mobile workers are individuals who don't work in a traditional office setting; instead, they use computers and Internet tools to perform their work, most often working from home or spending hours at a time in coffee shops and restaurants that provide wireless Internet connectivity (wifi).
One example of these workers is an individual who works at home. A home worker often tires of working alone and craves being around other people. A bustling coffee shop or a coworking environment can provide temporary resources to meet a home worker's needs.
Another example of mobile workers is a business start up. To save money, entrepreneurs use public spaces like coffee shops and their free wifi to get work done. A professional environment with additional resources such as desks, printers, conference rooms, and wifi can provide a superior solution for them. Networking with like-minded people can also be very conducive for small business development.
Graduate and PhD students often work on the go. They could use the same resources on a semi-regular basis. Students learn quickly how to work in crowded group spaces and often times thrive there. The opportunities to meet people who have similar research interests or could be business contacts after graduation are very valuable to them.
Computer programmers and web designers are the ultimate mobile workers. Their entire work and casual lives exist around computers. Especially mobile computers like laptops. Shared working environments are conducive to collaborate freelance work. Many computer professionals could use a physical place to hang out and get to know people while enjoying a modern lifestyle with a less ridge time structure than the traditional nine to five job.
