Coworking in Portland
To edit this page, the password is 'coworking'.
Thesis: The coworking movement seeks to develop community/collaboration work space for developers, writers, marketors, engineers, makers, designers and independents.
Vision: Independent knowledge workers need non-traditional community style office space away from their homes. By joining a community of small independents such as developers, writers, marketers, engineers, makers, designers and independents we feel that we can resolve their basic need for space, but with the added benefit of creating a new workstyle we call coworking.

Updates
02/21/08 - Dave (evolvnet at gmail dot com) posted desk spaces available in Portland's Pearl District under "Other Resources" (below).
03/07/07 - RavenZachary met with Eva Schweber, 'Chief Cat Herder' of CubeSpace PDX to get a better understanding of the coworking-like spaces that exist already in the city of Portland. CubeSpace PDX is likely going to meet the needs of a lot of people looking for coworking-like space.
02/21/07 - There was a meeting at the PDC to discuss tech office space in Portland. The OGuild Flexible Office Space page has the info from this meeting.
12/01/06 - I have a call in to the Portland Development Commission (PDC) to determine if there is any interest by the city as part of their effort to attract tech firms and tech talent to the area. I am also trying to track down the city council member that is interested in doing a tech incubator next to OMSI. There is a possible collaboration here. (Raven Zachary)
12/01/06 - Once we identify a core group of anchor tenants, willing to commit x amount per month for full-time office space, we will have the buying power to look at space options. Floaters, those that want part time or irregular time space, are also encouraged to sign up. (Raven Zachary)
What
A community office space (coworking) in Portland to support independent "workers" and small teams in the tech and creative sectors. The office would provide the opportunity for people to obtain full-time or part-time space. Shared amenities will be provided.
Shared Services:
- Internet Access
- Conference Room(s)
- Lockers (for those who want to store items securely on-site)
- Kitchen space
- Bathrooms
Why
- Working from home doesn't always work
- Working from coffee houses is becoming increasingly difficult due to demand
- Social environment - meet cool people, brainstorm, etc.
- Strength in numbers - overall cost reductions through pooling of resources
- Venue for future events
How
Ideally, the space would be leased by a non-profit organization, controlled by the tenants. Buying into the community space makes you a member of the non-profit with voting privileges.
When
As soon as there is sufficient demand. Ideally, we would look for 5 anchor tenants and a pool of 5-20 floating part-time tenants to financially commit for at least one year to make this happen. We would seek out 1,500-3,000 sq. ft. in a location that is convenient to the tenants.
Where
This is dependent upon the needs of the tenants.

Who
Please add your name, contact info, space and time needs, financial goals, and location preference(s).
- Raven Zachary, raven@rinzai.com, prefer office space with door, ~200 sq. ft., $500/mo. or less, full-time, dedicated office space within a coworking space.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick - roughly the same as Raven.
- Dawn Foster - small space (door preferred), $50-$100/mo. depending on space, only needed occasionally about 1 day per week on a drop in floating basis (no dedicated space needed).
- Greg Lund-Chaix, gchaix@DELETEMEosuosl.org - looking for a dedicated desk to plop a desktop machine full-time, access to copier/fax/conf room, door would be nice but a cube is fine, ~$250/mo.
- Marcus Estes, a space with expandible participation available, to accomodate a few co-workers initially, then more as we begin to hire. This worked very well at a collaborative space we helped found this year called Less Distracted.
- Dietrich Ayala - desk, table or couch space. occasional closed-door needed for phone conferences/interviews. possible expansion needs as our PDX community grows. 3-5 days a week. preferred location is NE. $100-200/mo.
- Ben Strackany, ben@DELETEMEstrackany.com - space w/ door, 2-4 days/week, internet & power (would love to host a server there), < $300/mo. I'm in inner SE. Location is important since if it takes too long to commute there I'll just work from home. ;)
- Adrian Baxter, abaxter AT gmx DOT net - Same as Ben about location, part time floater (probably a few times per month), couch/comfy chair/table/desk/whatever space with enough room for 2 or 3 laptops. If you email me, please put "COWORKING" in subject so I don't delete it as spam.
- Diana Larsen ~$300/mo. full-time, dedicated space w/door to keep a professional library, desktop & printer, and two desks. Access to natural light. I like Detrich's idea of access to comfy, creative space too. Best location: Alberta area/inner NE. WiFi and power a must.
- Julian Smith - moving to Portland in April, fiancee and I are both freelancers (mostly writing) looking for shared workspace, anywhere from 2-5 days a week, cubicle would work, relatively quiet, wifi and power definitely.
- Jenny Fremlin $200-300/mo, full-time, dedicated space w/door and shelving. I'll be moving to Portland this spring. I would like a space that I can use for both work and study, I'm finishing up a PhD and need somewhere to contain my books & papers. The idea of access to comfy, creative space is great.
- dalas verdugo ~$100/mo, full-time, 9-5. Mostly interested in a summer space with air conditioning because I can't work in the heat we had last summer. NE area, I need to commute from NE 60th and Halsey by bike or public trans. WiFi a must.
- Art Burden (aburden@hevanet.com) ~$100/month, 3/4 to full-time. Prefer dedicated space, but can compromise due to finances. Space for file storage would be great. SE works best.
- Jon Duell - duellj AT gmail DOT com - $100/month, 1/2 time. A dedicated space would be great in order to host a server, but not completely necessary. Only require internet and a desk. SE area prefered.
- Davee Evans - owlmonkey AT gmail DOT com - $400/month, ~200 or 300 sq ft. SE area preferred. Lots of computer gear so some additional security or lock-ability would be helpful. Need a couple desks for that. Interaction design freelancing.
